Pain free after long term hernia problem

A man from Hartlepool is now pain free thanks to successful surgery to repair a long term hernia problem operated on previously.

Robert Booth has suffered with a re-occurrence of his hernia – and having had surgery elsewhere on four occasions – it has always returned.

Robert, who is 67, was referred by his GP for an appointment with consultant surgeon Manuf Kassem at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust who operated on him. More than 18 months later, he has been given the all clear.

Robert, who had surgery at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, said: “I have had four operations to repair my hernia in the past but these have failed and my hernia returned again and again quite quickly after surgery.

“I used to serve in the armed forces in remote locations in places like Afghanistan and would always worry I’d experience a hernia there. It was quite stressful not knowing what might happen.

“After meeting with Mr Kassem, he reassured me that if I had one more procedure under him and his team then this could be sorted. Nearly two years later, I have had no further problems and am able to move around freely without any pain or discomfort. I have Mr Kassem and his team to thank for that.

“I am now retired and feel free to go travelling without worrying about having any more issues, it’s such a relief.”

Due to Robert having had previous operations, Mr Kassem had to firstly repair damaged tissue and use special mesh to avoid tension on the repaired muscles.

He said: “It is a very rare for surgery to take place to help repair a hernia for the fifth time – and it is very challenging for a surgeon. Because of the surgery Robert had already had, a lot of the muscles in that area were damaged and some of the meshes used in previous surgery were stuck together and needed clearing. Thanks to the specialist mesh and other wide ranging consumables that the trust provide for surgeons, we are able to do more and more to help patients.

“I am very pleased with how Robert’s operation went. He is now able to live a comfortable life without having to be concerned about the pain coming back again.”
